are we ready yet?

im kind of needing tips... James is really consistent in being able to go potty if i tell him to go.
he recently started grabbing at his diaper, and we have been able to take him a few times before he goes in his diaper, and he also say when he has gone... should i start training him?
if yes i really need tips! my biggest issue will be his communication skills... he is still catching up in his verbal skills. he is able to learn, and do things, and be consistent, he just has trouble expressing, or telling me what's going on...(because he is still learning to talk). should i wait until he can? or do i go with it as it is now, being that he goes when i ask him to, and is able to feel when he needs to and i can tell him to go if he grabs his diaper, and we usually make it? then there is the night time... do i do it all at once, or do i work on the day time first, then night time... what about when we are out? i don't want to push him, but i don't want to hold him back either...

  1. bud started pulling me into the bathroom at 15 mo. The next year was trying to figure out if HE KNEW & understood potty training.

Potty training is a skill. Something they need to be ready to do. No rushing If they are Not ready it it will not go well! I've seen it.....from others.

When bud started pulling me into the bathroom I would take him in...every. single. time. Even though...it was irritating. I didnt want to discourage him. And...the toilet STAYS in the TOILET room. momma is not allowed to pee in the livingroom, kitchen...ect...kids shouldnt either (my big pet peeve) HA. I also stuck sticker chart in the bathroom, every time he went he got to choose a sticker to put on the chart. I also let him choose his chart. We used SEVERAL different ones from this website: http://www.freeprintablebehaviorcharts.com/toilettrainingcharts.htm

the frog one was one of the first ones we used. every time he would go i would let him choose a sticker, once he filled the "path" with stickers I had a little treat box ($1 toys from walmart, target, dollar tree; little candy or gummies) he would get to pick one when his chart was filled.

Bud struggled with going poo on the toilet. So everytime he went he would get a treat too.

once he filled up the chart pretty consistant. Think we did a full week (each o those smaller charts would last about...a day & half maybe two days) i would move onto the bigger charts...like the car chart. Then do that for a few weeks! Soon enough he was potty trained! Some people say NO PULLUPS but pullups worked GREAT for us! Easy to pull down...and UP ;)

find what HE enjoys....as in ....treats/ rewards and run with it. Bud also LOVED HI 5s

i personally think potty training is MORE on the mother's part...it is DEFINENTLY harder on momma ;)

so take a deep breathe, try & relax, have fun "helping" your child learn a new skill....

    good luck

  2. Im thinking he's really close, if not ready. Yesterday he grabbed him self, said pee pee, and we took him and he went! We put him in trainers and he did it again. He likes skittles, we had been giving him one every time he went. But i was surprised he could do it yesterday. I dont think he knows yet not to go in his diaper, and i'm hoping trainers will help. I just need a day, home, to take him every half hour. To make it a routine for him. But like i said i dont want to push, so im wondering if i wait till he starts to tell me more. Pluss, jonathan is trying to copy james. So im wondering if i just wait a bit longer and train them both!:)

  3. If he is ready...which it sounds like he is!! I say..don't wait. I know it would be easier...but....if he is telling you..and actually going...that is AWESOME! His timing sounds good..probably won't be much longer unto he is trained fully during the day!

  4. im thinking i will start him... hes been saying it more... he has also figured out the difference between the two... (he used to say poo for both..) so... i just have to go buy trainers, cuz i think pullups wont allow him to feel "gucky" which he does not like being.

  5. What's the difference between trainers & pullups? Are you talking about those cotton underwear, thicker? Usually gerber brand?

Bud wore those & I put those plastic type pants over them..they help ”seal” In the mess but they can still feel the wet! I call plastic pants..grandpa pants. Bud did Not like the plastic pants...especially when he went potty In the thicker cotton ones & plastic pants!

  6. the cotton ones.... but hes prolly going to need the pull up till i can get him to hold it a little longer... he goes a little before telling me he has to go, so id rather not be doing laundry that often. :)
